THE SCIENCE

Why adaptive revision works

Most revision tools ask you to read, highlight, and hope for the best. UpGrades is built on decades of cognitive science research that proves there is a better way.

Spaced repetition, not cramming

In the 1880s, psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus discovered the "forgetting curve" -- the predictable rate at which newly learned information fades from memory. His research, confirmed by over a century of subsequent studies, showed that the most effective way to combat forgetting is to review material at strategically increasing intervals. This is spaced repetition, and it is the single most evidence-backed learning technique in cognitive science. UpGrades tracks your performance on every topic and subtopic across every subject you study. When you answer a question correctly, the system pushes it further into the future. When you struggle, it resurfaces that material sooner. The result is a revision schedule that is unique to you, one that ensures you spend your time where it actually matters rather than re-reading notes you already know.

Retrieval practice over passive review

Reading through a textbook feels productive. Highlighting key passages feels productive. But research from cognitive psychologists like Roediger and Karpicke has consistently shown that passively re-reading material is one of the least effective ways to learn. What works is retrieval practice: actively pulling information from memory rather than passively absorbing it. Every interaction in UpGrades is a retrieval event. You are never just reading; you are answering, explaining, and applying. When you get something wrong, the system does not simply show you the answer. It provides a targeted AI-generated explanation that addresses your specific misconception, then schedules a follow-up question to make sure the correction sticks. This "test yourself" approach has been shown in peer-reviewed research to produce up to 50% better long-term retention compared to re-reading the same material for an equivalent amount of time.

Interleaving builds deeper understanding

Traditional revision follows a blocked pattern: study all of Chapter 3, then all of Chapter 4, then all of Chapter 5. It feels logical, but research shows it produces shallow learning. Interleaving, the practice of mixing different topics and question types within a single study session, forces your brain to discriminate between concepts and strengthens the connections between them. UpGrades interleaves your practice by default. A single session might move from quadratic equations to cell biology to Cold War historiography, adapting the mix based on what each subject needs. This feels harder in the moment, and that is precisely the point. The additional cognitive effort, what researchers call "desirable difficulty," is what drives deeper encoding and more durable memory.

Built for the UK curriculum

UpGrades is not a generic quiz app with a British accent. Every question is mapped to a specific exam board specification point, so you know that what you are practising is exactly what your examiner is looking for. We currently cover 85+ subjects across 6 exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, Cambridge International, and Edexcel International) and 4 qualification types (GCSE, A-Level, iGCSE, and International A-Level). Content is structured by paper, topic, and subtopic so that your revision aligns precisely with how your exam is structured, not how a textbook happens to organise things.

For parents

Revision has always been a black box for parents. Your child disappears into their room with a textbook and you hope for the best. UpGrades changes that with a parent dashboard that shows real progress data: which subjects are improving, where gaps remain, how many sessions they have completed, and whether they are on track for their target grades. You get visibility without micromanaging, and your child gets the independence they need.

For schools

Schools get department-wide analytics, CSV bulk enrolment, and Ofsted-ready impact reports. Pupil Premium students receive silent Pro access with no visible indicators, so every student gets the same experience. Teachers can track cohort performance across subjects and identify students who need intervention before it is too late. Multi-academy trusts get a unified dashboard across all their schools.
